About us

Who we are
The Little Giants welcome all parents, carers and children personally and encourage them to talk to us about any concerns or queries they may have. We firmly believe in working with parents and carers and developing supportive relationships that enable us to provide the highest standard of care for all children. We have a facebook page and do newsletters throughout the year to keep everyone up to date with the latest information and news.

Children at Little Giants learn all the time through their play and through quality interactions with skilled practitioners. Our preschool resides within the Jubilee room at Cerne Abbas Village Hall. It has double doors providing access to the hall’s large, secure garden, which enables children to play in a covered and open secure area.

The garden provides opportunities for exploring the natural environment, and enjoying outdoor sand and water play.

Aims & Objectives

We aim to provide a warm and caring learning environment that encourages all children to reach their full potential. We offer your child a unique educational experience through our extensive resources & comprehensive indoor and outdoor facilities which enrich all areas of the early years curriculum.

Children at Little Giants Pre-school learn all the time through their play and through quality interactions with skilled practitioners.

To support this method of teaching we have…
Skilled adults to support learning.

They do this through observing and interacting, setting challenges and supporting children to meet their next steps. Our staff know the children very well and have sound knowledge of child development.

A free style environment inside and outside.

Children select their own resources (we do not get things out on the tables for them) children are made aware of resources that are not insight but are still accessible if required, this is due to being a pack away pre-school and having limited space.

Children learn best and show high levels of involvement when following their own individual interests.

Focus Children

Each week we have a group of focus children. We record some of the activities and learning moments via the childrens personal online learning journal Tapestry

We write written accounts of the learning for only the focus children each week but all the children are learning all the time.

How do we plan for your child’s individual learning?…

At the beginning of the week our teaching plans are blank. As we play and interact with the children we observe, assess and plan learning activities in the moment.

By working with the children in this way, on their own self-chosen activity they are motivated, interested and learning is at its best.

How can you help ….

Your involvement is extremely important.
Please complete your observations on Tapestry before your child’s next focus week.

We work this way because…

Young children are experiencing and learning in the here and now, not storing up their questions until tomorrow or next week. It is in the moment of curiosity, puzzlement, effort or interest – ‘the teachable moment’ that the skilful adult makes a difference. By using this cycle on a moment-by moment basis, the adult will be always alert to individual children (observation), always thinking about what it really tells us about the child’s thinking (assessment) and always ready to respond by using appropriate strategies at the right moment to support children’s well-being and learning (planning for the next moment).

All of our qualified staff hold a paediatric first aid certificate.

All staff continually update their training, both in house and by attending courses. Ensuring the needs of individual children are met at all times.

All children attending The Little Giants Pre-school will have a personal online E-Learning Journal, documenting their experiences and development during their time with us.

What is Tapestry?
Tapestry is a secure online system which holds observations and developmental records about your child in an E-Learning Journal.

Why Tapestry?
Tapestry provides parents/carers with the ability to view their child’s personal e-learning journal at any time. Observations can be viewed and contributed to by the parent/carer and other authorised family members through the commenting system. It also gives opportunities to have two-way feedback with your child’s key person which is especially valuable for those parents who cannot regularly drop off or pick up their child in person.

How to access the E-Learning Journal?
You can view photographs, observations and videos of your child by logging on with a secure username and password. You will receive an email telling you when a new observation or piece of work is available for you to view. This will enable you to follow your child's individual progress closely and allow you to talk with your child about their achievements and experiences.

If you have any questions about the Tapestry system please do not hesitate to ask our Pre-school Manager.
